Dhaka, May 16 (UNB) – Three days after a probe body gave him a clean chit in the railway cash scandal, former Railways Minister Suranjit Sengupta on Wednesday announced to return to active politics.
Speaking at a press conference at his Jigatola residence in the city, Suranjit said, "I’m innocent. I had no link with the cash scandal which was proved through an independent and proper investigation.”
Replying to a query whether he would take the helm of the Railways Ministry again, he said the Prime Minister will take the decision in this regard as it is under her jurisdiction as per the constitution.
A two-member inquiry committee formed led by Railway DG Mohammad Abu Taher submitted to Railways Secretary did not find any involvement of Suranjit Sengupta in the alleged bribed money of Tk 70 lakh believed to have been collected from job seekers at the Railway.
The committee submitted its report the Railways Secretary on May 13.
Earlier, on April 17, after a week of high drama, Suranjit Sengupta stepped down as Railways Minister to come out clean.
On April 9, members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained Suranjit’s APS Omar Faruq Talukder, Railway (East) GM Yusuf Ali Mridha and Divisional Commandant Enamul Huq when the APS’s car carrying them entered the BGB Headquarters at Peelkhana in the city at about 11:30 pm.
They were reportedly going to Suranjit’s house with illegal money of Tk 70 lakh in the car. However, the next day, the BGB members released them along with the money.
