Dhaka, May 16 (UNB) – The BNP-led 18-party alliance called a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal for Thursday demanding unconditional release of the top leaders of BNP and its allies, including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who were sent to jail after their surrender to trial court seeking bails on Wednesday.
The shutdown was also called demanding the release of other BNP leaders, including Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and opposition leaders and workers, arrested since Tuesday and demanding the withdrawal of all the ‘false’ and ‘motivated’ cases filed against the opposition leaders.
BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan announced the hartal programme from an emergency press conference held at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office at 5:35 pm. Leaders of the components of the alliance were not seen at the press conference.
Reading out a written statement, Nazrul said the top leaders, made accused in the case of torching a bus, were not identified as the main accused -- neither in the FIR nor the charge sheet. “The four accused in the case were outside Dhaka during the incident,” he said.
Nazrul termed the order of the court as ‘unexpected and frustrating for justice seekers. He said they are ‘surprised’ over the court order sending the top leaders to jail rejecting their bail petitions.
He said the government has filed the false cases against the national leaders of the 18-party, including BNP, as part of a conspiracy to create a new issue to hush up the incident of ‘enforced’ disappearance of M Ilias Ali and divert people’s attention.
The BNP leader strongly condemned and protested the arrest of over 100 opposition leaders and workers since Tuesday.
He also deplored police attacks on journalists and lawyers on Dhaka Judge’s Court premises today.
Replying to a question, Nazrul said their current anti-government movement will intensify further despite the arrest of and repression on the opposition activists.
Asked who will be the BNP’s spokesperson in absence of acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, he said it will be decided in the party forum.
BNP leaders Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Abdullah Al Noman, Barrister Shahjahan Omar, Adv Ahmed Azam, Fazlur Rahman Patal, Barkatullah Bulu, Barrister Mahbubuddin Khokon, M Shahjahan, Salahuddin Ahmed, Ehsanul Huq Milon, Abdus Salam, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Shirin Sultana and Shafiul Bari Babu were, among others, present at the press conference.
