Dhaka, May 16 (UNB) - World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) will be observed in Bangladesh as elsewhere across the globe tomorrow (Thursday).
According to International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the purpose of WTISD is to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide.
17 May marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union.
World Telecommunication Day has been celebrated annually on May 17 since 1969, marking the founding of ITU and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865. It was instituted by the Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos in 1973.
The theme this year is: Women and Girls in ICT.
According to ITU, gender equality is a basic human right enshrined in the UN Charter, and it is one of the main objectives of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). ICTs are tools that can help accelerate progress towards achieving this target.
In Bangladesh, different programmes have been taken up to mark the day.
Betar and BTV will air special programmes and national dailies will publish special supplement on the occasion.
President Zillur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Posts and Telecommunications Minister Rajiuddin Raju and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon issued separate messages wishing the success of the day.
