Detained Bangladeshi UN Observer Major Osmani released in Syria

Dhaka, May 16 (UNB) - Bangladeshi UN Observer Major Shahidur Rahman Osmani psc, who was detained by Syrian opposition activists, was released on Wednesday.

He was released at 4pm Bangladesh time, according to a release of ISPR.

Eighteen Bangladeshi unarmed officers have been working as UN observers in Syria.

Eight UN observers from different countries, including Osmani, were passing by a procession brought out by anti-government opposition activists at 4pm (Syrian local time) on Tuesday.

At one stage, the unruly activists took six UN observers, including Major Osmani, hostage.

Major Osmani was released and returned to his workplace
due to initiative taken by UN force Commander in Syria.

His physical as well as mental condition is now well, said the release.

The UN Security Council on March 20 and April 5 approved a resolution for containing the present political turmoil situation in Syria.

A total of 18 observers from Bangladesh went to the country at the end of April and this month in the wake of approval of the resolution.
