BEIJING, MAY 17 (AP/UNB) - The activist who was at the center of a diplomatic tussle between Beijing and Washington says Chinese officials have told him the passports that he and his family just applied for should be ready within two weeks.
Chen Guangcheng said in a phone interview Thursday he's not sure whether he'll be able to leave China quickly after that.
The blind activist has been under virtual house arrest for two weeks in a Beijing hospital following his dramatic escape from abusive officials in his home village. The U.S. Embassy sheltered him for six days, and he wants to travel to the U.S. to study.
Chen says officials who brought paperwork for him and his family to fill out Wednesday said the processing time for passports is up to 15 days.
