TOKYO, MAY 17 (AP/UNB) - Toyota President Akio Toyoda, taking the helm at Japan's auto industry group, is promising to keep production and jobs to help along this nation's recovery from last year's disaster.

Toyoda also criticized the government plans to raise the consumption tax Thursday and said the relatively high taxation on car ownership needs to change first.

He was speaking as the new head of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association.

He said production, technological innovation and the supply chain must be kept in Japan.
