
Dhaka, May 17 (UNB) - A Dhaka court on Thursday granted bail to BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi in a case filed in connection with bomb blasts at the Secretariat during hartal on April 29.
The court, however, rejected his bail petition in another case filed for torching a bus near the Prime Minister's Office the same day.
Judge M Zahurul Haque of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the orders after hearing two separate petitions filed by his lawyer Advocate Sanaullah Miah on May 7 against the bail rejection by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka.
On May 3, the CMM court turned down bail petitions of the BNP leader in the two cases – one filed for bomb blast at the Secretariat and the other for torching a bus near the PMO-- and sent him back to jail.
On April 30, plain-clothes police intercepted Ruhul Kabir Rizvi’s car at Kakrail and picked him up on his way back home from the party’s Nayapaltan central office.
Tejgaon police filed a case against 44 leaders and activists of the BNP-led 18-party alliance, including Rizvi, for torching a vehicle near the Prime Minister's Office during hartal on April 29.
On the same day, Shahbagh police lodged another case against 28 opposition leaders in connection with the bomb blasts on the secretariat compound. Rizvi was also among the accused.
Meanwhile, the same court rejected a bail petition of former deputy minister for health Sirajul Haque in a case filed for torching vehicles in front of the BNP central office at Nayapaltan on April 29.
The case was filed with Paltan Police Station for vandalising and torching vehicles near BNP central office at Nayapaltan during Sunday's hartal.
The court, however, rejected his bail petition in another case filed for torching a bus near the Prime Minister's Office the same day.
