Chittagong, May 18 - (UNB) – A former Union Parishad (UP) member was killed allegedly by his rivals over a land dispute at Premtala Gazaria in Sitakunda upazila on Thursday night.
The victim was identified as Oli Ahmad, 55, alias Boli Member of the area.
Police said Oli and his neighbour Ashok Chakrabarty had long been at loggerheads over taking lease a piece of land.
Ashok and his supporters locked into an altercating with Oli on Thursday night during a village arbitration arranged to settle the dispute.
Later, they stabbed Oli and hit him with an iron rod, killing him on the spot.
Villagers caught Ashok while he was fleeing the scene after the incident and handed him over local police.
A case was filed in this connection.
