
Dhaka, May 18 (UNB) - Commerce Minister GM Quader on Friday underscored the need for creating social awareness to discourage people from smoking.
“Anti-tobacco programmes will have to be strengthened alongside the government initiative to raise awareness about the bad impacts of smoking,” he told a function at BIAM auditorium in the city.
He also said initiatives should be taken to encourage tobacco farmers to get involved in alternative and profitable agricultural production.
Campaign for Clean Air (CCA) arranged the function where its field-level survey on tobacco and its bad impacts was released.
Radiation and Oncology Department head of National Cancer Research Institute and Bangladesh Cancer Society secretary general Prof Dr Sheikh Golam Mostafa and former National Board of Revenue (NBR) chairman M Abdul Majid also spoke at the function with CCA convener Aranya Anwar in the chair.
