Human chain calls for protecting Rajshahi from desertification

Dhaka, May 19 (UNB) - Speakers at a human chain here called for implementation of the Uttar Rajshahi Irrigation Project to protect the greater Rajshahi region from desertification.

Addressing the programme, they pressed for implementation of their 19-point demand, including supplying gas to the region and taking steps for modernization of silk industry in Rajshahi.

Rajshahi Rakkha Sangram Parishad formed the human chain and also a rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club.

Joined by people from different professions of Rajshahi, the hour long programme was held from 10am to 11am on Saturday.

Presided over by Liakot Ali, president of the organization, former mayor Mizanur Rahman Minu, singer Andrew Kishore, general secretary of the organization Jamat Khan, among others, spoke on the occasion.

They also demanded necessary allocation in the ensuing national budget for development of the region. Else, they warned of resorting to tough programme to realize their demands.
