News - NHRC boss for human rights education to create awareness
Dhaka, May 19 (UNB) - Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Prof. Dr Mizanur Rahman has urged the government to take initiatives to facilitate people’s access to education on human rights to protect their own rights.

“The Constitution of the country has guaranteed major human rights incorporated in the national charger as the fundamental rights Therefore, it is the state’s responsibilities to help people learn about their own human rights, and protect those as well,” he told a seminar at Cirdap auditorium in the city on Saturday.

The Faculty of Law of Dhaka International University (DIU) organised the seminar titled “Human Rights Education in Bangladesh”.

Speaking as the chief guest, Dr Mizan said the NHRC is working to create a culture of human rights in the country. “We should be vigilant regarding our rights along with being respectful to our duties as well.”

Underlining the importance of human rights education, the NHRC chairman said remaining tight-lipped in case of any human rights violations, no nation can achieve development.

He recommended establishing model national law schools to facilitate quality legal and human rights education.

Dr Mizan said the NHRC is going to raise people’s awareness on human rights with participation of law students from both public and private universities.

“The NHRC is also initiating a campaign against violence against women and girls named Brave Man Campaign. It is to target male students to raise their awareness on gender equality and generate respects for their counterparts.”

Dr Uttam Kumar Das, associate professor and dean (acting) of the Faculty of Law, Dhaka International University, in his keynote paper, recommended a national policy on human rights education.

Chaired by Vice-chancellor of DIU Prof. Dr Nurul Momen, the seminar was addressed, among others, by chairman (acting) of the Law Commission of Bangladesh Prof. Dr M Shah Alam, Vice-chairman of the Board of Trustees of DIU Barrister Shameem Haider Patwary and Chairperson of the Department of Law Shamim Ara.
