News - Khaleda wants CG on agenda to join dialogue
Dhaka, May 20 (UNB) - Leader of the Opposition and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Sunday said her party and their allies are ready to join dialogue only if the government keeps caretaker government on the agenda.

She made the remark while speaking at the mass hunger strike programme at Dhaka Mohanagar Natyamancha in the city.

Referring to her June 10 ultimatum to the government for restoring non-party caretaker government, Khaleda said if no specific announcement comes from the government, their next course of programmes will be announced from the earlier scheduled June 11 rally in the capital.

Expressing her hope that good sense will prevail upon the government, she said discussion is necessary in the country and they are ready to join discussion.

“But for the discussion, the government will have to clearly and specifically mention the agenda of caretaker government and who will be the head of such a government.” The BNP chairperson said there will be no discussion without a specific agenda on the caretaker government and it will have to be made public in writing.

She categorically said it will not be allowed to hold the general election under a partisan government or under the President.
Khaleda said they have no objection if the word caretaker is changed, but it must be a non-party, neutral government to hold the next general election.

The opposition leader said if their demand for restoring caretaker government is not met, her party knows how to realise the demand through movement along with people.

She said they do not like arson, hartal, and killing people by `logi-boitha’. “We believe in peaceful democratic programmes like rally, procession, human chain and hunger strike. But in case of government obstructions, we’ll be forced to call hartal.

During her about 50-minute speech from 5:05 pm, the former Prime Minister listed various failures of the government and also “corruption by the Prime Minister and her families; repression on opposition, forced disappearance, government’s obstruction on democratic activities.” She also spoke of her plans if her party comes to power in the future.

After her address, Saiara Nawal, only daughter of missing BNP leader M Ilias Ali, offered drinking water to Khaleda Zia at about 6 pm as she led the 18-party alliance leaders and workers to break the mass hunger strike. The alliance observed the token hunger strike from about 10 am.

Khaleda criticised the Prime Minister for her recent remarks that her government has been able to accomplish all the works in the last three year. “If that’s the case have they been able to provide job for each household, fertiliser to the farmers free of cost and rice at Tk 10 per kg?” she questioned.

Khaleda alleged that the party in power only made their own fortune, nothing for people. She also criticised firing shots by ruling party MP Giasuddin saying that it proves if the election is held under the AL government they will capture polling centres with various arms to stuff ballot boxes.

The BNP chief also slammed the attempt by plainclothes police to enter the residence of Ilias Ali at the dead night a few days ago saying that this is unlawful.

The opposition leader mentioned various incidents of “graft by the government” and claimed that they have documents of corruption by the Prime Minister and her families. “If their trial is not held in the court of the country, the trial will be held one day in the international court.”

People of different professions, including Bikalpadhara Bangladesh secretary general Maj (retd) Abdul Mannan,  Barrister Rafiqul Huq, former Dhaka University Vice chancellors Prof Muniruzzman Mia and Prof Emajuddin Ahmed, founder of Ganoshastha Kendra Dr Zafarullah Chowdhury, National Press Club president Kamaluddin Sabuj, expressed their solidarity with the mass hunger strike.

Leaders of the BNP-led 18-party alliance, including Khelafat Majlish chairman Moulana M Ishaq, BNP standing committee members Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, Tariqul Islam, Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, Jamaat-e-Islami assistant secretary general Mia Golam Parwar, Kalyan Party chairman Syed M Ibrahim, LDP presidium member Redwan Ahmed, NAP president Zebel Rahman Gani, NDP chairman Khandaker Golam Mortuza, Labour party chairman Mustafizur Rahman, and BJP secretary general Shamim Al Mamun, among others, took part in the hunger strike and spoke on the occasion.
