Narayanganj, May 20 (UNB) – The Department of Environment (DoE) fined a composite textile mill Tk 22 lakh in Sonargaon upazila on Sunday for polluting environment.
A DoE team, led by director (enforcement) Munir Chowdhury, raided Chaity Composite Ltd at Tripurdi in Sonargaon and discovered that its effluent treatment plant (ETP) was faulty and operating party, causing serious damage to environment.
The untreated liquids discharged by the mill to croplands, water bodies and public properties situated around it have been causing hazards and irreparable damage to them and environment for the last several years.
The team slapped Tk 22 lakh fine on the mill and realized the amount from its management issuing a warning that gas and electric connection of the mill will be cut and the mill will be shut if its ATP is not made fully operational by May 27.
The team also secured a bond (written guaranty) signed by the mill authority that they will immediately stop polluting environment by installing a fully operational ATP and pay the affected local people to the tune of Tk 50 lakh as compensation for the damage caused by the factory to them.
