News - 3 get life imprisonment for killing youth in Sylhet
Sylhet, May 21 (UNB) - A tribunal here on Sunday convicted three people and sentenced them to life imprisonment in absentia for killing a young man back in 2009.

Convicts Saudi expatriate Goyas Mia alias Goyas, son of Maskandar Ali, his wife Rozina Begum and Iqbal Hossain Bakul, son of Abdul Matin of Hawsha village in Sadar upazila, were also jailed for another five years for kidnapping the victim.

The tribunal fined each of them Tk 20,000 in the murder case while Tk 5,000 in the kidnapping case, in default, to suffer one year and six months more RI respectively.

According to the prosecution, Goyas planned to kill Ali Akbar Sumon, son of Cherag Ali of Pashchimpara village in the upazila, after he came to know upon his return from Saudi Arabia that his wife Rozina had developed an extramarital relationship with him.

As per the plan, Goyas called Sumon to his house on September 25, 2009. Later, his body was recovered from a haor on September 28.

Victim’s younger brother Ali Ahsan Sohel filed two cases-one for killing Sumon and another for kidnapping him.

Police submitted the charge sheet in the cases on September 4 in 2010.

After examining the records and witnesses Judge of the Speedy Trial Tribunal Dilip Kumar Debnath handed down the verdicts.
