Hathazarai power plant fined Tk 10 lakh for river pollution

Chittagong, May 22 (UNB) - The 100-megawatt Peking Power Plant at Hathazarai was fined Tk 10 lakh on Tuesday on charges of polluting water of river Halda.

The power plant was fined for polluting water, damaging fish resources and biodiversity of the river by discharging fuel into the river, said an official release of Environment Department.

Furnace oil, brought by the state-run power plant on April 11, spilled into the water of the river after being mixed with rainwater mainly due to negligence of the authorities concerned, which caused serious environmental damage to the river.

An investigation carried out by the department found that 1600 litres furnace oil spilled into the river, which his known as the country's largest natural fish spawning ground.

Director (Enforcement) of Environment department Mohammad Munir Chowdhury fined the power plant calling in its two engineers-Jashim Uddin Bhuiyan and Nur-e-Alam-at Dhaka on Tuesday.
