Ruling party-backed candidate elected Baufal pourashava mayor

Patuakhali, May 22 (UNB) - Ruling party-backed candidate Ziaul Haque Jewel was unofficially elected mayor of Baufal pourashava in an election held on Tuesday.

Jewel, central committee member of Swechchashebok League, was unofficially declared mayor of the pourashava defeating his nearest rival Golam Kibria Pannu, general secretary of Baufal Awami League.

Jewel got 2,672 votes while Pannu received 2,219 votes.

Abul Kalam Azad, Returning Officer and UNO of Baufal, announced the results at the upazila parishad around 9pm.

A total of five mayoral candidates contested the election.

Some 6,300 out of total 7,510 voters cast their ballots in the poll.
