
Chittagong, May 23 (UNB) - Police on Wednesday submitted charge-sheets against 53 leaders and activists of the BNP-led 18-party alliance, including the city Jamaat ameer, in two of the six cases filed in connection with the May 13 violence in the port city.
The two cases were filed with Kotwali Police Station under the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act on charges of torching vehicles during the violence.
M Jafar Iqbal, sub-inspector of the police station, submitted a charge-sheet before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court against 30 opposition men, including BNP city unit general secretary Dr Shahdat Hossain, in the case filed for torching vehicles in Kazir Dewri area.
The SI submitted another charge-sheet against 23 opposition leaders and activists, including Jamaat-e-Islami city chief ANM Shamsul Islam, MP, in the case filed for torching vehicles at Wasa intersection in the city.
On May 13, the six cases were filed against over 2,000 leaders and activists of the 18-party alliance in connection with the violent clashes between police and the opposition activists over staging a mass procession of the alliance in the city.
At least 150 people, including 50 policemen, were injured in the clashes and a number of vehicles were damaged by the demonstrators at different points of the city.
The trouble began when police intercepted a procession of Islami Chhatra Shibir at Kazir Dewri while they were coming to BNP’s Nasiman Bhaban office at Nur Ahmed Road to join the mass procession of the alliance.
Of the cases, four were filed against 1,700 opposition activists with Kotwali Police Station while the rest two with Khulsi Police Station.
