PM for concerted efforts to check water wastage

Dhaka, May 24 (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday asked all concerned to take coordinated efforts for checking the wastage of water considering its scarcity.

The Prime Minister also asked all the ministries to work in a coordinated manner for management of water resources to ensure its proper use in the future.

Hasina said this while presiding over the 8th meeting of the National Water Resources Council at her office.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, PM’s press secretary Abul Kalam Azad said the Prime Minister emphasised updating the ‘Bangladesh: 25-year National Water Management Plan’ keeping pace with time and ensuring its appropriate implementation through the participation of all ministries and stakeholders.

The Prime Minister also gave some directives to the officials to take into consideration some issues related to water resources while updating the 25-year long plan.

Hasina said her government attaches top most importance to proper utilisation of water considering its scarcity and future demand. She stressed the need for regular dredging of rivers to maintain their navigability.

The meeting also discussed the National Water Policy and Water Act apart from reviewing the progress of implementation of the 25-year plan and decided to modify it in the future.   

Members of the council Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Land Minister Rezaul Karim Hira, Water Resources Minister Ramesh Chandra Sen, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, parliament members and water experts attended the meeting.
