
Dhaka, May 24 (UNB) – The five lakh Bangladeshi expatriates living in Malaysia send US$1 billion every year and it could be raised to US$1.5 billion, Industries Minister Dilip Barua said on Thursday.
“The remittance could be raised to 1.5 billion US dollars if the Malaysian government cooperates as Malaysia is the largest manpower market for Bangladesh,” he said.
Dilip Barua was addressing the inaugural function of a three-day exhibition of Malaysian goods and services at Sonargaon Hotel arranged marking the 40 years of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and Malaysia.
He said Bangladesh and Malaysia can work together in industrial sector taking advantage of the global economic ‘recession’.
The minister called upon the Malaysian investors to invest directly or jointly in Bangladesh’s potential industrial sector, including shipbuilding, light engineering, ICT, agro-processing, halal food, textile, plastic and handicraft.
Branding Bangladesh as a unique place in South Asia for foreign investment, Barua urged Malaysia to relocate its high-tech industries to Bangladesh.
Malaysian High Commissioner in Dhaka Dato Jamaluddin Sabeh, Robi Axiata chief financial officer Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, zonal director of Tourism Malaysia Zulkifly Md Said, Triune Exhibition and Event Management Services chief executive officer Kazi Wahidul Alom were, among others, spoke on the occasion.
The Malaysian High Commissioner said Bangladesh can achieve economic progress by utilising the experience of Malaysia in tourism sector as Malaysia is one of the top 10 countries in the word in tourism. “Malaysia will cooperate with Bangladesh in this sector,” he said.
Business organisations from different sectors like airlines, tourism, health, education, banking, real state, food processing and ICT are taking part in the expo.
It will remain open from 10am to 8pm every day.
