Govt urged to formulate tariff policy to protect domestic industries
Shipbuilding policy by June, automobile industrial policy by July, says Barua

Dhaka, May 24 (UNB) – Business leaders here on Thursday urged the government to formulate a rational tariff policy to protect the domestic industries alongside ensuring the consumer rights.
They also urged the government to ensure a congenial atmosphere in the country for massive investment to help build an industry-based economy.
The business leaders came up with the demand at a seminar, titled ‘Encouraging tariff structure for setting up industries to produce import-alternative products,’ at the Industries Ministry’s conference room in the afternoon.
Industries Minister Dilip Barua spoke at the seminar as the chief guest while Tariff Commission Chairman Dr Mozibur Rahman as a special guest. Industries secretary Monsur Ali Shikder presided.
Speaking on the occasion, Dilip Barua said considering all aspects of the stakeholders, the government is set to announce the shipbuilding policy by June while automobile industrial policy within July 31 this year.
The minister emphasised protecting domestic industries and the interests of importers. “It’s the responsibility of the government to protect the rights of the country’s consumers.”
He also called upon the manufacturers and importers to maintain and ensure the quality of products to reach the ultimate goal.
Runner Automobile chairman Hafizur Rahman, Uttara Motors Chairman Motiur Rahman, Vice President of Bangladesh Refrigerators Manufacturer’s Association Mizanur Rahman, Managing Director of Rupsha Automobile Mohiuddin Ahmed and representative from Butterfly Electronics Industries Mostafizur Rahman, among others, spoke at the seminar.
