Dhaka, May 25 (UNB) - The national vitamin 'A' plus campaign will be observed across the country on June 2 with a view to preventing childhood blindness, reducing child mortality and strengthening immunity.
Prof. Dr. Ekhlasur Rahman, Director, Institute of Public Health Nutrition (IPHN) and Line Director, Nutrition Services under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said high-powered vitamin-A capsule will be fed to children aged 1 to 5 years and anti-worm tablet to those aged 2 to 5 years.
The Vitamin A plus campaign is observed twice a year - after every six months.
Over 400,000 health workers and volunteers will work together to make the nationwide initiative a success. Besides, all permanent health centers as well as the mobile centres at bus stands, railway stations, launch terminals and airports will remain open from 9am to 5pm to ensure that all children receive the doses.
Recent research shows that it has been possible to reduce the mortality and child diseases by 13 percent only through feeding anti-worm tablet two times in a year.
