Rangpur, May 25 (UNB) – Police arrested 34 students of Rangpur Polytechnic Institute following a clash with them that left over 30 injured on Friday.
Police said a written test for the post of deputy assistant food inspector was scheduled to be held at the Institute this morning.
Students of the Polytechnic Institute, who have been on a movement against a reported move to downgrade the status of diploma engineers, locked the main gate of the institute preventing the job-seekers from entering it.
On information, police rushed in, unlocked the gate and dispersed the students.
The written test, however, started at 10am, an hour behind the schedule.
Later, the agitating students in a procession went out of their campus and damaged at least 10 vehicles, attacked Nawabganj police outpost and a traffic post in the town.
Police fired about 50 teargas shells to disperse the unruly students who pelted brick chips at the policemen in retaliation.
Police later raided different hostels at Shalban, Mistripara and Jummapara near the Polytechnic Institute, and picked up 34 students suspecting their involvement in the incident.
Riot police have been deployed on the campus to fend off further trouble.
