Sylhet, May 26 (UNB) - Hundreds of city-dwellers staged demonstration protesting outage demanding power supply in the heart of the city on Saturday.
They also blocked roads creating gridlock causing immense suffering to the commuters.
Police said several thousand people of Shah Paran Police Station area took to the streets at 12 noon, ransacked vehicles at Shibganj, Hatimbagh, Sadipur, Tilagarh and Brahmanpara. They also set fire to used tyres and staged violent demonstration on the road demanding an end to frequent outage demanding non-stop power supply to the vast area.
Mujnur Rahman, one of the sufferers and housewife Dilara of Brahmanpara said their school-going children can`t do home work and they can`t sleep at night due to frequent outage in this summer. Power is supplied to the area only 6 hours in 24 hours.
Wasa (water and sewage authority) can`t supply water to the area for want of power, they said adding, ``Outage coupled with non-supply of water has augmented our woes many times which has become almost unbearable in the sultry heat of the summer``.
``There is pure water to drink, let alone cook food``, said an housewife Sadpur.
A police team, led by Shah Paran thana OC Enamul Monwar, arrived in the area and tried in vain to persuade the power-hungry people to lift road blockade.
However, they withdrew the blockade at 1 pm after police, power supply authority and other local administration officials assured them that power will be supplied to the area within half an hour.
