News - HC grants bail to 5 oppon MPs in vehicle torching case
Dhaka, May 27 (UNB) - The High Court on Sunday granted bail for six months to five opposition MPs accused in a case filed for torching a bus near the Prime Minister’s Office during hartal on April 29.

Granting the bail, the HC bench comprising Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice FRM Nazmul Ahsan also issued a rule upon the government to explain in a week as to why the other accused in the case should not be granted bail.

Emerging from the court, Additional Attorney General MK Rahman told UNB that the High Court granted the bail to the opposition lawmakers so that they could attend the budget session of parliament beginning at 5.30pm today.

BNP lawmakers MK Anwar, Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie and Barrister Mahbubuddin Khokon, LDP president Col (retd) Oli Ahmad MP and BJP chairman Andalib Rahman Partho MP who had been put behind bars in the case were granted the bail.

Earlier, on Wednesday, BNP and its alliance leaders were denied bail for the second time in the case.

On May 21, Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Erfanullah framed charges against the front-raking leaders of the BNP-led 18-party alliance in the case.

Turning down their bail prayers, the same court on May 16 sent the opposition leaders to jail on their surrender in compliance with the High Court order.

They are BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members MK Anwar, Dr Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Goyeshwer Chandra Roy, and Brigadier General (retd) ASM Hannan Shah, ex-Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, LDP chief Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed, BNP joint general secretary Aman Ullah Aman, BNP leaders Ruhul Kuddus Talukdar Dulu, AKM Fazlul Haque Milon, Nazim Uddin Alam, and Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, MP.

Swechchhasebak Dal president Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, and general secretary Mir Sharafat Ali, Sapu, Chhatra Dal president Sultan Salauddin Tuku general secretary Amirul Islam Khan Alim, and organising secretary Anisur Rahman Khokon, Juba Dal leaders SM Jahangir Hossain Sardar, Rafiqul Islam Majnu, and Saiful Islam Nirob, BJP Chairman Andalib Rahman Partha, Swechchhasebak Dal leader Yasin Ali, Jagpa President Shafiul Alam Pradhan, 18-party alliance leader Sheikh Shwakat Hossain Nilu, DU Chhatra Dal convener A Matin, JCD leaders Habibur Rashid Habib, and Kamal Anwar Ahmed Litu, BNP leaders Abul Bashar, Anwaruzzaman Anwar, Laxmipur district unit BNP leader Lutfur Rahman alias L Rahman, BNP leaders Solaiman and Yunus Mridha.
