Dhaka, May 28 (UNB) – The government has so far made 15 lakh SIMs (subscriber identification modules) inactive for alleged unauthorized VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) operation in the country, the Posts and Telecommunications Minister told Parliament on Monday.

The government has been taking legal steps against those who are being found guilty, said Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju in reply to a supplementary question of Shamsul Haque Chowdhury (Awami League-Chittagong).

The Telecom Minister, however, admitted the limitations of the BTRC (Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission) in handling the allegations related to unauthorized VoIP business and mentioned technological advancement that sometime makes things difficult

“We immediately make the SIM inactive when we receive any complaint,” he said.

The Minister also said that Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) introduced 40,000 broadband internet services (Asymmetric digital subscriber line-ADSL) in different divisional cities including Dhaka.
