News - MK Anwar, Khokon, Oli, Partha freed on bail
Dhaka, May 28 (UNB) – Four among the five 18-party alliance MPs granted bail by the High Court on Sunday in a vehicle torching case were released on Monday evening.

They are BNP standing committee member MK Anwar and joint secretary general Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Liberal Democratic Party President Oli Ahmed and Bangladesh Jatiya Party President Andalib Rahman Partha.

Meanwhile, another BNP MP, Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, was not released as he was shown arrested in another case filed with Dhanmondi Police Station last year.

Altaf Hossain, senior superintendent of Dhaka Central Jail, said they set the BNP MPs MK Anwar and Mahbub Uddin Khokon free around 6:40pm after they received the copies of their bail orders.

Several hundred BNP leaders and activists greeted the duo with wreaths at the jail gate.

Oli Ahmed and Andalib Rahman Partha walked out of Kashimpur-2 Jail around 7:30pm, jail sources said.

A good number of opposition supporters and family members of the two MPs, led by BNP Chairperson's adviser MA Mannan, received them at the jail gate.

Earlier, on Sunday, the High Court granted bail for six months to the five opposition MPs, including Annie, accused in the case filed for torching the bus near the Prime Minister’s Office during hartal on April 29.

Out of 45 charge-sheeted accused in the case, only the five MPs of the opposition alliance were granted bail.

Granting the bail, the HC bench comprising Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice FRM Nazmul Ahsan also issued a rule upon the government to explain in a week as to why the other accused in the case should not be granted bail.

On May 21, Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Erfanullah framed charges against the front-raking leaders of the BNP-led 18-party alliance in the case.

Turning down their bail prayers, the same court on May 16 sent the opposition leaders to jail on their surrender in compliance with the High Court order.
