News - BNP rejects AL’s ‘offer’ for discussion on interim govt framework
Dhaka, May 29 (UNB) – Terming it misleading, opposition BNP on Tuesday turned down the ruling Awami League’s statement that discussion could be held on the framework of an interim government to conduct the next general election.

“They (AL) didn’t clearly mention about the interim government as they actually want an interim government under a partisan government,” BNP front-ranking leader Barrister Moudud said.

He was addressing a discussion organised by BNP at Engineers’ Institution marking the 31st death anniversary of President Ziaur Rahman, founder of the party. Zia was killed on May 30, 1981.

Referring to Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam’s recent remarks that discussion can be held on the framework of an interim government for holding the next general election, Moudud said the ruling party leaders are misleading people making statements on interim government.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was present at the discussion.

Moudud said there will come a day when the Prime Minister herself will have to compromise and say she wants to amend the constitution for protecting democracy.

The BNP standing committee member said if the Prime Minister announces publicly that the next general election will be held under a non-party neutral government, then BNP and it allies will join dialogue.

Moudud warned that the opposition’s current movement will continue as long as the Prime Minster does not concede to their demand for holding the next polls under a non-party neutral administration.

Taking part in the discussion, BNP’s another standing committee member MK Awnar urged the government to place a new proposal in parliament on a non-party government.

He said it is their responsibility to come up with a new proposal as it has dropped the non-party caretaker government provision from the constitution.

MK Anwar said the government can avoid the name of caretaker government if it has any reservation to it but there must be an arrangement for a non-party government.

Chaired by BNP vice-chairman TH Khan, the discussion was addressed, among others, by Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, former vice chancellors of Dhaka University Prof Moniruzzaman Mia and Prof Emajuddin Ahmed, ex-secretary Asafudowla,  Kalyan Party chairman Syed M Ibrahim and Jatiya Press Club president Kamaluddin Sabuj.
