Dhaka, May 30 (UNB) - The High Court on Wednesday summoned eight police officials in connection with sexual harassment of a litigant girl and assault on journalists on the premises of Dhaka Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Harun-or-Rashid, Deputy Police Commissioner (Lalbagh zone), Rajib-al-Masud, an Assistant Police Commissioner, Salahuddin Khan, officer-in charge of Kotwali Police Station, sub-inspectors Jahangir, Zaman, Nuruzzaman Sarker and AmirAfjal Biplab and the president of the Police Club have been asked to appear before the High Court at 10:30am on June 6 to explain their role in the incident.

The HC also asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to submit two reports within 48 hours containing the details of the incident, background of the responsible police officers, their activities, and steps taken against them after the incident.

An HC division bench comprising Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Justice Jahangir Hossain came up with the suo moto orders and rule following the news items published in different newspapers today (Wednesday) over the incident.

The HC bench also asked the government to explanation within two weeks as to why it should not be directed to take legal action against the cops responsible for the incident.

The Home Secretary, the IGP, the DMP Commissioner and the summoned police officials were made respondents to the rule.

The HC also ordered the victim, Farzana Akter, her parents, advocate Sultana Kamal, executive director of Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), two lawyers and Prothom Alo, Kaler Kantha and Bangladesh Pratidin correspondents, to appear before it on the same day to assist the court.

Two sub-inspectors of Kotwali Police Station assaulted and harassed the 15-year-old girl, her parents on the premises of Dhaka magistrate's court on Tuesday.

As the victim was narrating the incident to the reporters, the policemen beat up the girl, six journalists and four lawyers.
