News - 3-day Indo-Bangla Trade Fair begins Thursday
Dhaka, May 30 (UNB) – The three-day Indo-Bangla Trade Fair 2012 and ‘North East India-Bangladesh Business Conclave’ begins here on Thursday, aiming to attract Indian entrepreneurs to Bangladesh and expand trade ties with the northeast Indian states.
 
“We expect a significant Indian investment here alongside Bangladeshi investment in Arunachal Pradesh in hydroelectric power generation through the event,” President of India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IBCCI) Abdul Matlub Ahmad told reporters at a press conference at Sonargaon Hotel on Wednesday.
 
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki is already in the city while Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma will reach on Thursday morning to attend the event, he said.
 
Matlub said they along with Nabam Tuki and Mukul Sangma will meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganobhaban at 5pm on Thursday to discuss various bilateral issues, including investment by Bangladesh in Arunachal.
 
“We want to invest for 20,000 megawatts of hydroelectric project in Arunachal. We’ll discuss the issue during the conclave and at the meeting with the PM,” he said.
 
The IBCCI with support from the Indian High Commission in Dhaka and active cooperation from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), Bengal Chamber of Commerce, BNCCI and Merchants Chamber, Kolkata are organising the three-day event at Sonargaon Hotel.
 
A big business delegation along with a good number of government officials, including Arunachal Industries and Textiles Minister Tapang Taloh, parliamentary secretary for trade and commerce Phosum Khimhun and deputy director, trade and commerce Sonyung Modi are also expected to join the inaugural session of the fair and conclave.
 
This is for the third time that IBCCI is organising such an exposition providing the entrepreneurs and business houses of both India and Bangladesh with a unique opportunity of showcasing their goods and services under one roof, the organisers said.
 
Finance Minister AMA Muhith will inaugurate the fair at 10am. Industries Minister Dilip Barua and High Commissioner of India Pankaj Saran will also speak at the inaugural session.
 
Bangladesh-North East India Business Conclave will begin at 2:30pm at the same venue. Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni will be the chief guest. The theme of the conclave is ‘Emerging Business Opportunities between North East India and Bangladesh: The Way Forward.’
 
Chief Executive Officer of the State Bank of India Gian Parkash Khetarpal, IBCCI vice president Dewan Sultan Ahmed, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Triune Exhibition and Event Management Services (TEEMS), the event coordinator Kazi Wahidul Alam, among others, spoke at the press conference.
