Gazipur, May 30 (UNB) – A youth was found dead at Ramchandrapur in Kaliganj upazila on Tuesday night, hours after he was reportedly arrested by police.
The victim was identified as Mamun ,32, son of Hossain Ali of Baragaon village in the upazila.
Mamun’s mother, Monwara Begum, alleged that police in connivance with local influential people killed her son and dumped his body into a bush, an allegation turned down by police.
Police claimed that local people snatched Mamun from their custody on their way to the police station and lynched him.
But locals said they saw Kaliganj police led by sub-inspector Nripen Chandra Dey taking handcuffed Mamun to the police station after arresting him from Baragaon Market around 7:30pm on Tuesday.
Monwara said Mamun and local UP member Abdul Hekim had long been at loggerheads. She alleged that police influenced by Hekim killed Mamun.
Contacted, Enayet Hossain, officer-in-charge of the police station, said Mamun had demanded Tk 50,000 as toll from Rifat of Baragaon on Tuesday afternoon.
Being informed, police went to arrest him, but agitated locals snatched him while he was being taken to the police station and gave him a good beating.
Later, police recovered the body from the bush beside the road and sent it to Gazipur Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Several injury marks caused by stabbing were seen at different parts of his body, the OC said.
