JAKARTA, Indonesia, MAY 31 (AP/UNB) - An Indonesian accused of helping build the car bomb used in the 2002 Bali nightclub attacks says life imprisonment would be too heavy a punishment for his crimes.
State prosecutors have sought a life sentence for Umar Patek, a leading member of the al-Qaida-linked network Jemaah Islamiyah. He is accused of illegal weapons possession, concealing terrorist acts, immigration violations and premeditated murder.
In his defense Thursday at the West Jakarta District Court, the 45-year-old said the sentencing demand was too heavy given his minor role in these crimes.
Patek was arrested last year in Pakistan.
