News - Bangladesh ready to do business with Myanmar: GM Quader
Dhaka, May 31 (UNB) – Commerce Minister GM Quader on Thursday said Bangladesh is highly interested to do business with Myanmar ensuring a win-win situation for the both next-door neighbours.

He said connectivity – by air, sea and land – is the key to giving a boost to bilateral trade.

“Hope, all the trade barriers with Myanmar will be removed soon…and Bangladesh as a close neighbour will enjoy better trade facilities compared to other countries,” he told a seminar at Ruposhi Bangla Hotel in the city.

The Commerce Minister also said problems related to payment mechanism would be resolved as Sonali Bank and the central bank of Myanmar have signed a deal on currency exchange.

Bangladesh Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BMCCI) arranged the seminar, titled ‘Doing Business between Bangladesh and Myanmar and Mechanism for Settling Payments’ where its honorary adviser Karar Mahmudul Hasan presented the keynote paper.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Faruk Khan spoke as a special guest at the programme held with BMCCI president KB Ahmed in the chair.

BMCCI vice president SM Nurul Hoque, Myanmar Parliament Member U Yan Win, Chairman of First Private Bank of Myanmar Dr Sein Maung and Prof of Economics, Yangon Institute of Economics Dr Maung Maung Soe also spoke on the occasion.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Faruk Khan hoped that three ways of communication – air, sea and land – with Myanmar would soon be made functional which would help strengthen bilateral trade.

“All the formalities have been done regarding the air route. A final deal will be signed in this regard next month when the Myanmar’s President will be here,” Khan said adding that the river route would also be made operational soon.

“Things are moving fast at the highest government-level…the businesspeople should work faster at the business-level,” Faruk Khan said.

He proposed formation of a parliamentary group with representatives from the two countries to resolve all the trade barriers at the highest level and make the trade relations more vibrant.

KB Ahmed said Bangladesh and Myanmar are uniquely positioned to become strategic partners in developing their economies with fundamental focus on agriculture, rural development and wealth creation more on equitable social balance.

He identified orientation and confidence building and establishing mechanisms for carrying out trade as challenges and primary requirement will be connectivity between the two countries to overcome the challenges.
