25 pro-BNP lawyers charge-sheeted
Dhaka, May 31 (UNB) - Police on Thursday pressed charges against 25 pro-BNP lawyers in a case filed for unleashing vandalism and creating chaos at a lower court on May 22.
Investigation officer (IO) of the case Abidul Islam, who is also a sub-inspector of Kotwali Police Station, submitted the charge sheet under the Speedy Trial (Law and Order Disruption) Act to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka in the afternoon.
The court fixed June 13 for hearing on acceptance of the charge sheet.
Earlier, in the morning, the lawyers surrendered before the court and sought bail in compliance with an HC order.
The High Court on May 24 granted 10-day ad interim anticipatory bails to the 22 pro-BNP lawyers on their surrender before it.
The HC bench in its order asked the lawyers to surrender to the designated trial court before the expiry of the bail period.
The pro-BNP lawyers include Dhaka Bar Association president Borhanuddin and its former president Sanaullah Mia.
Members of Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum on May 22 boycotted proceedings at four trial courts in Dhaka protesting a court order sending BNP MP Mahbub Uddin Khokon who faces a case for torching a vehicle near the Prime Minister’s Office on April 29 to jail.
More than 100 pro-BNP lawyers, led by advocates Sanaullah Miah and Masud Ahmed Talukder, brought out a procession on the court premises.
The agitating lawyers reportedly vandalised windowpanes at the District Judge’s Court and Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court during the demonstration.
Later, a case was filed with Kotwali Police Station against 99 people for the incidents under the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act. Twenty-nine people were named as accused in the case. Seven other accused have not sought bail yet.
