News - PM inaugurates National Vitamin 'A' Plus campaign
Dhaka, June 2 (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday called upon all, including parents, public representatives and health officials, to work sincerely to ensure sound health for the country’s future generation.

"We want our country to be developed and prosperous one…the future generation will have sound health and lead the country ahead," she said while inaugurating the countrywide National Vitamin 'A' Plus Campaign at her Ganobhaban residence.

She fed the children aged between 6-11 months the blue Vitamin A capsule while children of 1-5 years age group the red Vitamin A capsule.

The Prime Minister also fed the children of 2-5 years of age the de-worming tablets.
Sheikh Hasina urged the family members to ensure that every child is given the Vitamin A and de-worming tablets and other vaccines in due time to help build a healthy and strong nation.
She directed the public representatives, including MPs, members of Zila Parisad, upazila and union councils, to give special attention to whether all children are brought under the immunisation programme.

Despite resources constraint, Hasina said, infant and maternal mortality rate have come down in the country due to dedication and sincerity of the government.
She also mentioned that her government has introduced allowances for the destitute pregnant and lactating mothers.

Listing various steps taken in the health sector, the Prime Minister said the present government is implementing various programmes, including the use of digital technology in health services.

She said her government, during its previous term, took initiatives to provide vitamin A capsule to the children to prevent their night-blindness and de-worming tablets to ensure their good health.

Under the campaign, more than 2.20 crore children, aged 6 months to five years, are being fed high-powered Vitamin A capsules while more than 1.90 crore children are being given de-worming tablets across the country.

Children aged six months to 11 months are being given blue capsule enriched with high-powered Vitamin A, children aged one to five years are being provided with red capsule of high-powered Vitamin A while children aged 2-5 years de-worming tablets.
The countrywide health workers and volunteers are working together to make the nationwide campaign a success.

Every year, almost five lakh children in the world fall victim to night-blindness disease for lack of Vitamin A leading to their blindness and one-third of under-five Bangladeshi children die due to the disease.

According to a WHO estimate, night-blindness was identified as one of public health problems.
High-powered Vitamin A capsule distribution activities among children aged six months to five years after every six months began in 1974, aiming to check night-blindness and blindness.

Among others, Health Adviser to the Prime Minister Professor Syed Modasser Ali and State Minister for Health Dr Captain (retd) Muzibur Rahman Fakir spoke at the function. Senior Secretary of the Health Ministry Humayun Kabir was also present.
