River terminal inaugurated at Tongi

Dhaka, June 2 (UNB) – The Tongi River Port in Gazipur has started functioning with the opening of its terminal.

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan inaugurated the terminal on Saturday.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) constructed the new river port under the second phase of a project to establish circular river routes around Dhaka city to develop the transport system of and reduce traffic congestion in the capital.

The two-storey 5,640 sq ft terminal building constructed at a cost of Tk 2.85 crore has 2,734 sq ft parking bay, two steel gangways, two pontoons, one RCC jetty, one surface drain and one approach road.

The first phase of the project began in July 2000 and ended in December 2004.

Ten landing stations were set up after dredging 29.50 kilometres of river routes with a cost of Tk 36 crore under the first phase. The landing stations are Suwarighat near Sadarghat, Nawabbag, Kholamora, Rayerbazar, Bosila, Gabtali, Aminbazar, Sinnirtek, Birulia and Ashulia.

Jahid Ahsan Russell MP, Mayor of Tongi Municipality Advocate Azmat Ullah Khan, Shipping Secretary Md Abdul Mannan Hawlader and Chairman of BIWTA Dr Md Shamsuddoha Khandaker were present at the inaugural ceremony.
