News - Japan Cabinet reshuffle expected over tax bill

TOKYO, June 03 (AP/UNB) - Japan's prime minister is expected to reshuffle his Cabinet as he woos the opposition in an effort to pass a bill to increase taxes.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda says he's in talks with the opposition, which is demanding the removal of two Cabinet ministers. Public broadcaster NHK says the Cabinet reshuffle is set for Monday.

Noda met Sunday with ruling party legislator Ichiro Ozawa, who opposes the tax increase. They failed to agree, meaning the prime minister needs opposition support to pass the tax bill.

The ruling party says the tax plan is needed to trim public debt and fund recovery costs from last year's earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters.
