News - Media bashing on; this time Ashraful
Dhaka, June 3 (UNB) – A day after the media bashing by the Prime Minister, LGRD Minister and Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam on Sunday slammed the journalists for what he said provoking people.

The Awami League leader came up with the remark when reporters asked about the looming June 11 grand rally and the ultimatum given to the government by the opposition to restore the non-party caretaker government and initiate dialogue in this regard.

Leader of the Opposition and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on May 20 said her party and their allies are ready to join dialogue only if the government keeps caretaker government on the agenda.

Referring to her June 10 ultimatum to the government for restoring non-party caretaker government, Khaleda said if no specific announcement comes from the government, their next course of programmes will be announced from their scheduled June 11 rally in the capital.

“You (media) always provoke people by saying all these things…holding a grand rally is a political right, they can do it. It has no link with the ultimatum. We hope you’ll refrain from doing such provocative acts,” Ashraful said after inaugurating an inception workshop on upazila governance at the city’s LGED Bhaban.

The Awami League general secretary said many think that things are not on right track as there is no proper dialogue. “Dialogue is a continuous process… dialogue is now on, and it’ll be going on. There may be differences of opinion, but dialogue is the only way to break the standoff as it has no alternative.”

Ashraful affirmed that there will be dialogue and discussion, and peaceful elections as per the constitution. “And we hope all will participate in the elections and all will exercise their franchise, and then there will be an elected government in the country.”

Earlier, the LGRD minister inaugurated the inception workshop on Upazila governance project as the chief guest.

Addressing the function, Ashraful said most of the military and military-backed governments in the past had used the local government to gain their own interest. “We sincerely want to use the local government in a democratic process.”

As per its election pledges, he said, the Awami League-led grand alliance government amended the Upazila Parishad Act to enable the elected representatives of people to work independently and effectively.

State Minister for LGRD Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Swiss Ambassador Dr Urs Herren, EU representative Lenka Petkova and UNDP Country Director Stephen Priesner were present as special guests.

After the inaugural session, a working session was held with the participation of senior government officials, local government experts and elected representatives to prepare a five-year plan for Upazila Parishads.
