Benapole, June 4 (UNB) - Police on Sunday night filed two cases against some 5,000 people in connection with the attack on the motorcade of Jatiya Sangsad Whip Sheikh Abdul Wahab at Bilkapalia in Monirampur upazila of Jessore on Saturday.
Sub-inspector Ferdous Wahid of Abhaynagar Police Station filed a case against 4,000-5,000 people mentioning the names of only 30 who were accused of attacking the whip, the upazila chairman, police and the officials of Water Development Board, vandalising vehicles, arson attack and preventing police from discharging their duties at Kalishakul village.
Chairman of Nehalpur Union Parishad and Abhaynagar BNP law affairs secretary Najmus Sadat and Monoharpur UP chairman M Mohituzzaman are among the accused.
Sub-inspector Touhidul Islam of Monirampur Police Station filed the other case against 4,000-5,000 unnamed people on charges of obstructing government activities, intrusion and attacking police, said AKM Ajmal Huda, the newly made officer-in-charge of the police station.
Local people attacked the motorcade of whip Wahab at Bilkapalia in Monirampur upazila, which injured 15 people, including Assistant Police Super Abul Kalam and Monirampur upazila chairman A Malek.
Wahab, an MP from Abhaynagar-Basundia constituency, was unhurt in the attack.
Local people, who are opposed to the Tidal River Management (TRM) project, attacked the motorcade when the whip was going to inaugurate the project at Bilkapalia.
Officers-in-charge of Abhaynagar and Monirampur police stations Ahsan Habib and Md Chhoyruddin respectively were closed to Khulna police range following the incident that took place on Saturday morning.
Whip Abdul Wahab at a press conference at the Jessore Circuit House on Sunday night said there is no alternative to the TRM project to save 20 lakh people of Bhabodaho region from waterlogging.
He alleged that a vested quarter, including a few owners of fish enclosures and lessees of khas land, has started politics with the TRM project for their own interests. “They fueled the violent incident on that day,” he said.
The whip said the government has distributed Tk 48,000 per acre a year for two years in advance among the affected land owners within the project area.
“A total of Tk 1.5 crore has so far been distributed among over 100 farmers,” he said adding that no previous governments took any such initiative.
Wahab also alleged that angry locals attacked his motorcade as police were inactive. “(ASP) Abul Kalam let the untoward incident happen.”
Acting Deputy Commissioner of Jessore Zahurul Islam was present at the press conference.
Meanwhile, the High Court is set to hear today (Monday) a writ petition filed against the TRM project filed by 30 landowners.
