Court orders publishing ad asking Jamaat acting Ameer, 3 others to surrender
Dhaka, June 6 (UNB) - A Dhaka court has directed the authorities concerned to publish advertisements in two national dailies asking acting Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Maqbul Ahmad and three others, all fugitive accused in a bus torching case, to surrender before it by June 13.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Erfanullah passed the order this (Wednesday) morning.
The three other fugitive accused are Jamaat assistant secretary general Nurul Islam Bulbul, Islami Chhatra Shibir secretary general Delwar Hossain Sayedee and Abdul Jabbar.
Tejgaon police filed the case against 45 leaders and activists of the BNP-led 18-party alliance, including BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, for torching a bus near the Prime Minister’s Office on the night of April 29.
On May 10, inspector of the Detective Branch of police Nurul Amin, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet against 45 leaders and activists of the BNP-led 18-party alliance, including Fakhrul, in the case.
The charge-sheeted accused also include BNP leaders Dr Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, MK Anwar, Hannan Shah, Mirza Abbas, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Amanullah Aman, Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Fazlul Haque Milon, Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal president Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal president Sultan Salahuddin Tuku and Liberal Democratic Party president Col (retd) Oli Ahmad.
Earlier, police arrested BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, central committee member Kamruzzaman Ratan and five others in the same case.
On, May 16, 33 key leaders of the BNP-led 18-party alliances, including Fakhrul, surrendered before the court complying with the order of a third bench of the High Court and submitted separate petitions seeking bails. However, the court sent them sent to jail rejecting their bail petitions.
On May 21, the same court issued a warrant for the arrest of Maqbul Ahmad and three others as they did not surrender before it as per a High Court order.
The 18-Party alliance enforced countrywide general strike on Apr 29 and 30 protesting the disappearance of BNP leader M Ilias Ali and his driver. A vehicle was torched near the PMO and crude bombs were hurled at the Secretariat compound during the hartal hours on April 29.

On the same day, Shahbagh police lodged another case against 28 opposition leaders in connection with the bomb blasts at the Secretariat, making Mirza Fakhrul the main accused.
Later, the vehicle torching case was shifted to the DB police.
On May 7, when pro-BNP lawyers moved to the HC seeking bail for the accused, presiding judge Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury granted all the accused, including BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, anticipatory bails till submission of police reports in the two cases, and issued a rule upon the government to explain as to why the accused should not be granted regular bails.
Differing with the presiding judge’s order, co-judge M Nazrul Islam Talukder asked all the accused-petitioners to surrender before the trial court for bails within a week and also asked the police not to harass them until then.
On May 10, Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain sent the bail petitions of the opposition alliance leaders to the third bench of the High Court since two judges of a division bench earlier passed split orders on the petitions.
On May 14, the third bench of the High Court ordered the opposition leaders to surrender before the trial court by May 16 in the case. The one-judge bench of Justice Mohammad Anwarul Haq passed the order.
