BEIJING, JUNE 6 (AP/UNB) - An ailing veteran Chinese activist who spent two decades in prison has apparently hanged himself in a hospital one year after being released from jail.
The brother-in-law of labor activist Li Wangyang says he saw Li's body in a hospital Wednesday in the central Chinese city of Shaoyang not long after Li apparently committed suicide.
Zhao Baozhu says Li was found on his feet, with a white strip of cloth tied tight around his neck and connected to a window bar above.
Zhao told The Associated Press that he is suspicious about Li's death because the activist had never expressed a desire to kill himself despite spending 20 years in prison and being very sick.
Phones rang unanswered at the Daxiang District People's Hospital, where Li was being treated for heart disease and diabetes.
