News - BNP annoyed as June-10 ultimatum goes unheeded
Dhaka, June 7 (UNB) - Opposition BNP on Thursday voiced dissatisfaction as the government has given the cold shoulder to its June 10 ultimatum for restoring the caretaker government provision in the constitution.

BNP standing committee member Tariqul Islam at a press conference at its  Nayapaltan central office said party chairperson Khaleda Zia had given a three-month ultimatum to the government from its March 12 grand rally in the capital demanding restoration of the  nonparty caretaker government system for holding the next general election under it.

He said BNP has been raising its voice against the government’s ‘failures and misrule’ involving people without enforcing programmes which cause sufferings to people. “This is unfortunate but true that there has been no positive response to the ultimatum from the government so far.”

Tariqul told reporters that opposition leader Khaleda Zia will announce the next course of programme from the opposition’s June 11 mass rally to be held in capital Dhaka.

He said the mass rally will be held on a number of issues and demands, including the restoration of the non-party caretaker government, return of missing Ilias Ali and his car driver alive, solutions to gas, water and electricity crises, containing price hike, protesting government failures to check the deteriorating law and order, corruption, politicization and enforced disappearances, and demanding withdrawal of cases filed against 18-party top leaders and their unconditional release.

Tariqul said they submitted applications to the DMP Commissioner and the authorities concerned of the National Sports Council on May 24, seeking permission for using microphone and the venue for the public meeting. “But so far we haven’t got any response from the government.”

He said the Sports Council informed them that it would not be possible for them to allow the meeting at Paltan Maidan as beautification works were going on over there, he said.

Tariqul said the June 11 mass rally will be peaceful and hoped that the government will immediately allow the use of microphone for carrying out peaceful activities centering the rally and determine the rally venue.
“Otherwise, the government will have to shoulder the responsibility for any situation to be arisen out of it,” he warned.

BNP leaders Abdullah Al Noman, M Shahjahan, Zainul Abdin Farroque, Abdus Salam and Shirin Sultana were, among others, present at the press conference.
