
Dhaka, June 7 (UNB) – The High Court on Thursday granted bail to 30 leaders of the BNP-led 18-party alliance, including BNP acting secretary general Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, in a vehicle torching case.
The HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan passed the order after hearing 12 separate petitions by the defendants.
Earlier, the High Court on May 27 granted bail for six months to five opposition MPs accused in the case.
They are BNP lawmakers MK Anwar, Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie and Barrister Mahbubuddin Khokon, LDP president Col (retd) Oli Ahmad MP and BJP chairman Andalib Rahman Partho MP.
Granting the bail, the HC bench comprising Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice FRM Nazmul Ahsan also issued a rule upon the government to explain in a week as to why the other accused in the case should not be granted bail.
On May 21, Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Erfanullah framed charges against the front-raking leaders of the BNP-led 18-party alliance in the case.
Turning down their bail prayers, the same court on May 16 sent the opposition leaders to jail on their surrender in compliance with the High Court order.
The BNP-led alliance leaders who secured bail today are: BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Dr Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Goyeshwer Chandra Roy, and Brigadier General (retd) ASM Hannan Shah, ex-Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, BNP joint general secretary Aman Ullah Aman, BNP leaders Ruhul Kuddus Talukdar Dulu, AKM Fazlul Haque Milon and Nazim Uddin Alam.
They also include Swechchhasebak Dal president Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, and general secretary Mir Sharafat Ali, Sapu, Chhatra Dal president Sultan Salauddin Tuku general secretary Amirul Islam Khan Alim, and organising secretary Anisur Rahman Khokon, Juba Dal leaders SM Jahangir Hossain Sardar, Rafiqul Islam Majnu, and Saiful Islam Nirob, swechchhasebak Dal leader Yasin Ali, Jagpa President Shafiul Alam Pradhan, 18-party alliance leader Sheikh Shwakat Hossain Nilu, DU Chhatra Dal convener A Matin, JCD leaders Habibur Rashid Habib, and Kamal Anwar Ahmed Litu, BNP leaders Abul Bashar, Anwaruzzaman Anwar, Laxmipur district unit BNP leader Lutfur Rahman alias L Rahman, BNP leaders Solaiman and Yunus Mridha.
