Myanmar: Calm restored after rioting that killed 7
YANGON, Myanmar. JUNE 9 (AP/UNB) - Authorities say security forces in western Myanmar opened fire on rioters who burned hundreds of homes. At least seven people died in the sectarian violence but authorities say calm has been restored.
Friday's rioting appeared to be in retaliation for the June 3 killings of 10 Muslims. All those killed Friday appear to be Buddhists, judging by their names.
State television announced Saturday that troops reinforced police in Maungdaw and Buthidaung townships in Rakhine state, where the mobs rampaged. The state-run newspaper Myanmar Ahlin said security forces opened fire to restore order. A dusk-to-dawn curfew was applied and public gatherings of more than five people banned.
Many Buddhists consider Muslims there to be illegal settlers from Bangladesh.
