News - 1 killed in Jhenidah police firing
Jhenidah, June 10 (UNB) - A man was killed in police firing when villagers clashed with law enforcers over the arrest of an accused at Pikepara village in Sadar upazila early Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Wahab, 55.

Locals said two groups of villagers had long been at loggerheads over establishing dominance in the neighbourhood and a case was filed against some people in this connection on Saturday.

At about 2 am , police from nearby Betai camp, led by camp-in-charge Abdur Rahim, went to the village to arrest the accused.

While they were returning to the camp after arresting two accused, including Wahab, villagers chased them and tried to snatch Wahab, triggering a clash.

At one stage, police opened fire on the villagers that left Wahab dead on the spot. Four cops, including camp-in-charge Rahim, were also injured during the clash.

Villagers said Wahab was acting as a mediator to settle the dispute between the two rival groups of the village.
