News - Draft policy to control overloading by vehicles okayed
Dhaka, June 11 (UNB) - The Cabinet on Monday approved the draft policy to operate the Motor Vehicles Excess Load Control Centre Management Policy-2012 , aiming to check overloading by motor vehicles on the roads.

The approval was given at the regular weekly meeting of the cabinet held at the Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said plying of overloaded vehicles is risky and it damages roads, which ultimately increases the road maintenance cost.

In the absence of a specific policy, he said, the existing government directives on controlling the loads of vehicles could not be implemented.

To minimise the risk and maintenance costs and ensure the full implementation of existing government directives on the issue, the cabinet approved the policy, the cabinet secretary said.

The cabinet was apprised about the participation of Bangladesh delegation in the 45th meeting of Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank led by Finance Minister AMA Muhith.

Besides, another report on the participation of Bangladesh delegation in the 6th meeting of the Sub-committee on Aquaculture of Committee on Fisheries of UNFPA was placed before the cabinet.

Cabinet members, advisers to the Prime Minister and state ministers and secretaries concerned attended the meeting.
