Dhaka, June 11 (UNB) - Minister without portfolio Suranjit Sengupta on Monday said the opposition must make it clear whether it wants a free, fair and peaceful election or unseat the government from power.
“Today, you (Khaleda) will have to make it clear whether you want peaceful polls or dislodge the government,” he said apparently referring to the opposition’s mass rally.
The former Railways Minister also urged the opposition to come out from the culture of issuing ultimatum because such ultimatum could not unseat any democratically elected government in the past.
Suranjit was speaking at a discussion titled ‘No discussion beyond the constitution; No election under any unelected government’ organised by the Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote at the Public Library auditorium in the city.
Ruling out the possibility of restoring the caretaker form of government to oversee elections, Suranjit said Awami League does not want to step into the trap of caretaker as this system has proved to be the reason for contentions and conflicts.
“The movement now the opposition is carrying out is isolated from people …it’s basically based on their (opposition) workers,” the Awami League leader told the meeting.
About the constitution, Sunrajit said, “Constitution is the supreme law of any country. You’ll (opposition) have to abide by it if you want to participate in the election.”
He said the Election Commission constituted recently is very strong. “Holding fair polls under this Election Commission is very much possible.”
Suranjit said, “Parliament is the centre of all discussion…we can discuss any problem here. This is where discussions are held as per the construction. Those who override the Constitution are criticised.”
He urged the opposition to return to parliament shunning the street agnation.
Presided over by Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote president Fazlul Karim, the discussion was addressed, among others, by Prof Dr Abdul Mannan Chowdhury and Advocate Afzal Hossainand Shahe Alam Murad.
