News - Get ready for elections: Hasina asks AL MPs
Dhaka, June 11 (UNB) - The Awami League President and Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, on Monday asked the party lawmakers to get ready for the next general election and increase contact with their respective constituencies.

She gave the directive while addressing an AL Parliamentary Party (ALPP) meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

Meeting sources confirmed that the Prime Minister informed the lawmakers that as per a recent survey, the condition of the ruling party in some 175 constituencies is better.

She said that as per the information from the party sources and the reports from different intelligence agencies, it was known that of the existing seats in the current parliament the party’s condition in about 30 seats is not good while moderate in another 30 seats, not so good or so bad.

Hasina further said that the condition in the other seats is comparatively better.

As per the constitution, the next general election will be held on January 25, 2014. “So, take preparation for the election,” sources quoted the Prime Minister.

She also asked the lawmakers to increase contact with their respective constituencies.

Hasina asked them to resolve any misunderstandings with the party grassroots leaders and coordinate with them properly.

AL general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, speaking at the meeting, advised the lawmakers not to brandish firearms, rather show good behaviour to the people.

He said that to convey the developments of the government, the lawmakers will have to go to the voters and people of their respective areas.

Meanwhile, in the official briefing, chief whip Abdus Shahid said that the Prime Minister has asked the lawmakers to project to the people the development activities of the government.

He also said that discussions were also held in the meeting on the upcoming elections. “The Prime Minister asked the lawmakers to increase contact with their respective areas.”

Amir Hossain Amu, ABM Anwarul Huq, Abdullah Al Islam Jacob, ASM Firoze, Shahiduzzaman Sarker, Sadhan Majumder, Atiur Rahman Atiq and Tarana Halim, among others, also took part in the discussion.
