Savar, June 12 (UNB) – At least 20 people were injured as the garment workers who were demonstrating demanding a hike in their wages clashed with police in Ashulia for the second day on the trot on Tuesday.

Locals said the workers of ADL Garments of Hameem Group owned by FBCCI president AK Azad started staging demonstration in the morning for the second day as the authorities failed to meet their demand to hike salary even after two weeks of assurance of increasing their wages.

They abstained from work, took to the street and blocked Abdullahpur-EPZ road at Banglabazar by burning tyres.

The agitated garment workers also vandalised at least 20 vehicles on the road.

On information, police rushed in and charged batons on the workers to disperse them.

But the workers retaliated by pelting the law enforcers with brickbats, triggering a clash at about 10:30 am.

A chase and counter chase took place during the melee that left at least 20 people injured.

Later, additional police, and members of Rapid Action Battalion and APBN rushed to the spot and were trying to bring the situation under control as of 11:50 am.

Against the backdrop of RMG unrest, the authorities of nearby garment factories declared their factories closed in the morning.

Earlier, on Monday, over 50 garment factories were closed for a day in Ashulia area apprehending unrest amid apparel workers’ demonstration for pay hike.  

Police and witnesses said hundreds of workers of Artistic Design, a packaging factory of Hameem Group located at Narasinghapur, went on a work abstention in the morning and started agitation in front of the factory, demanding that their salaries be raised.
