News - Myanmar violence: Dhaka expects no trans-boundary spillover
Dhaka, June 12 (UNB) - In the wake of sectarian violence in the Rakhine state of Myanmar, Bangladesh expressed the hope that developments in the Rakhine state will not have any trans-boundary spillover.

A press statement issued by the foreign ministry on Tuesday said, “Bangladesh and Myanmar are maintaining close consultations to ensure that developments in the Rakhine state do not have any trans-boundary spillover.”

“The local administration and the law-enforcing agencies in the border area have been advised to remain alert and increase vigilance.”

The Bangladesh government is observing the situation in the neighbouring Rakhine state of Myanmar and is particularly saddened by the loss of lives and property resulting from the ongoing incidence of violence, the release said.

Bangladesh appreciates the steps taken by Myanmar in containing the unrest and reaffirms its commitment to stand by the country in their efforts to restore peace and stability in the state of Rakhine, it said.

Bangladesh expressed its hope that Myanmar government will be able to deal with the situation in the best possible way and restore normalcy in the region in the shortest possible time.

The statement also said Bangladesh and Myanmar enjoy the best of relations and recent interactions at various levels demonstrate the sustained interest of both the countries to further consolidate the multifaceted bilateral cooperation in the best interest of the people of the two countries.
