News - President for boosting export to Germany
Dhaka, June 13 (UNB) - President Zillur Rahman on Wednesday emphasised increasing export of world-class Bangladeshi products to Germany, the second largest export destination of Bangladesh.

The President made the remarks when outgoing German Ambassador to Bangladesh Holger Michael paid a farewell call on him at Bangabhaban.

During the meeting, it was informed that Bangladesh exported products worth US $200 crore to Germany while imported goods worth US $ 7 crore during fiscal 2009-2010.

President Zillur said Bangladesh also exported 12 ships to Germany and hoped that trade and investment between the two countries will further be increased in the days to come.

He said Germany may import world-class items like ceramics, pharmaceuticals, jute goods, home textiles, computer software and recently developed medium and small-sized ships along with readymade garments from Bangladesh considering competitive prices.

The President appreciated the outgoing German envoy for discharging his assignment successfully here, and said Bangladesh gives importance to strong bilateral relations between the two friendly countries.

Holger termed the existing relations between Bangladesh and Germany as excellent and hoped that the relations would further be strengthened.

He recalled that the Prime Minister of Bangladesh visited Germany, while the German President visited Bangladesh, and these state visits further deepened the relations between the two countries.

The outgoing envoy highly praised the government’s efforts that helped accelerate economic growth of the country.

Describing the Bangladeshi-made ships as world class, the outgoing German envoy mentioned that Germany has a huge demand for RMG and leather goods from Bangladesh. “Germany has been making investment in jute sectors of Bangladesh for the last six decades.”

Holger said his country is keen to further expand the GAZ programmes in Bangladesh.

Secretaries to the President’s Office were present at the meeting.
